History and interesting facts

White guava: Tropical Superfood and the "Fruit of the Aztecs"

  • Etymology and names: The name comes from the word guayabo in the language of the Taino Indians — "fruit of the tree". Spanish conquistadors called it the "paradise apple" for its incredible aroma, capable of filling an entire house with fragrance from a single cut fruit.
  • Vitamin C champion: Guava is the tropical record holder: it contains 4-5 times more vitamin C than an orange. A single fruit covers the body's daily need for this vitamin, even surpassing blackcurrant.
  • Ancient roots: Guava originates from the tropics of the Americas. It was part of the diet of the Aztecs and Incas. In the 16th century, the Portuguese brought it to India, which today has become the world's largest producer of high-quality puree.
  • White vs. Pink: White guava has a denser, grainier texture and a higher content of natural sugars. It is an ideal raw material for thick nectars, jams and confectionery fillings.
  • Healing leaves (Rare fact): In the tropics, guava leaves are also considered healing. Decoctions with powerful antiseptic action are made from them. In some regions, crushed leaves are still used as a natural water "purifier".
  • Two harvests a year: Guava can produce two harvests a year. The main harvest season for white guava in India is October – February, which ensures stable supplies of raw material to the global market.
  • Product history: Industrial production of aseptic puree became widespread in the 1970s. Modern decanters and sieves make it possible to obtain perfectly smooth puree without a single particle of small, hard seeds.
  • Ripeness indicator (Rare fact): A ripe white guava is so aromatic that its smell can be detected dozens of meters away. In air transport, fresh guava is forbidden to be carried without airtight packaging because of its penetrating aroma.
