History and interesting facts

Tomato: The "Golden Apple" and a Berry by Law

  • Etymology and names: The name "pomodoro" comes from the Italian pomo d’oro — "golden apple". The word "tomato" goes back to the Aztec tomatl. The French called it pomme d’amour — "apple of love".
  • Botanical berry and a legal case: From a biological standpoint, the tomato is a multi-chambered berry. In 1893, the US Supreme Court officially declared it a vegetable for import tax purposes, creating one of the most famous legal precedents in botany.
  • Lycopene and the thermal paradox: The tomato becomes more beneficial after heat treatment. When heated, the concentration of available lycopene increases several-fold. This makes tomato puree biologically more valuable than the fresh fruit.
  • The myth of toxicity: For centuries, tomatoes were considered poisonous in Europe. Legend has it that George Washington's cook tried to "poison" the future president with a dish of tomatoes, unaware of their benefits.
  • Global variety richness: More than 20,000 tomato varieties are registered: from white and lemon to black. Weight ranges from tiny cherries to giants over 3 kg.
  • The tomato's "hearing" (Rare fact): Tomatoes "hear" the buzzing of bees. Vibration at certain frequencies makes flowers release pollen more actively, which significantly increases yields.
  • Global geography and harvest: We provide raw material supplies from China, Italy, Spain and Russia. This allows us to deliver puree with different sweetness and viscosity profiles to meet the client's needs.
  • Product history: Industrial concentrate production began in Italy at the end of the 19th century. The use of vacuum apparatus made it possible to preserve the natural red color without darkening.
  • The astronaut fruit (Rare fact): Tomatoes have been successfully grown on the ISS. They are recognized as one of the most promising crops for providing vitamins to crews on interplanetary flights.
