History and interesting facts

Red Grape: Natural Antioxidant and Benchmark of Color

  • History of the name: In French, German and Spanish the name of the grape retains its ancient connection with wine: raisin (French), Weintraube — literally «wine grape» (German), uva (Spanish). In English, however, the historical link to wine was lost. The Latin name Vitis comes from a verb meaning «to twine», which accurately describes the nature of this powerful vine.
  • Ancient dispute of history: The earliest traces of vineyards, 8000 years old, were found in Georgia, and in Armenia the oldest winery was found, operating as early as 4000 years before our era. Historically, it was the red varieties that first attracted the attention of mankind.
  • Wealth of anthocyanins: Red grape can take on any shade: from pink and crimson to dark blue and black. This palette is due to the high content of anthocyanins — natural pigments that are among the most powerful antioxidants.
  • The French paradox: There are large-scale studies explaining the low incidence of heart disease in France by the tradition of consuming red wine, rich in polyphenols and resveratrol, which are found in abundance precisely in the skin of red grapes.
  • Use of the harvest: The distribution of the world harvest is strictly segmented: an overwhelming 71% goes to the production of wines and concentrated juices. Dark varieties are the most valuable raw material for restoring color and astringency in the food industry.
  • Color intensity (Color Intensity): For red grape concentrate, the most important B2B parameter is color intensity (Color >= 600). Our product acts as a powerful natural coloring agent for fruit drinks, berry nectars and bases for non-alcoholic wines.
