History and interesting facts

Pumpkin: The Orange Treasure and Queen of Weight

  • Etymology of the name: The English word pumpkin, French potiron, German Kürbis and Spanish calabaza all go back to the Greek pepon ("large melon"), which passed into the European languages through Latin pepo.
  • The oldest inhabitant of the planet: Pumpkin is one of the most ancient domesticated crops. Archaeologists find its seeds in Mexico dating back more than 7000 years. It reached Europe with Columbus's expeditions as the "orange treasure".
  • The botanical giant berry: From a scientific standpoint, the pumpkin is a huge multi-seeded berry (pepo). By biological structure, it is a relative of the watermelon and the melon.
  • Vitamin T and metabolism: Pumpkin is an extremely rare source of vitamin T (carnitine). It is critical for speeding up metabolism and helps efficiently digest heavy food.
  • Weight record holder: Pumpkin is the champion of the plant world by mass. The world record weight of a single pumpkin exceeds 1200 kilograms. Even common varieties can produce fruits weighing tens of kilograms per season.
  • Global geography and harvest: We supply fresh puree during the harvest period in Italy, Austria and Russia (September – November). The use of local butternut varieties guarantees maximum beta-carotene.
  • The pumpkin lantern and talisman (Rare fact): The tradition of carving lanterns out of pumpkins came from Ireland, where turnips were originally used. In America, it was discovered that pumpkin is more convenient for making protective lanterns.
  • Living vessels (Rare fact): Some pumpkin species were used as vessels before the invention of ceramics. A dried pumpkin is so durable that water and wine can be stored in it for years.
  • Product history: Industrial puree production became widespread in the 1940s. Steam cooking technology allows us to obtain thick, homogeneous puree with a native sweet flavor.
