History and interesting facts
Bilberry: "The Black Gold" of Forests and an Elixir for Eyesight
Etymology of the name: The English name bilberry and the German Blaubeere refer to the deep blue-black color of the berries and their ability to stain skin and clothing, while the French myrtille and Spanish arándano preserve the ancient link to myrtle. The Latin name Vaccinium myrtillus refers to the similarity of its leaves to those of myrtle.
An untameable wild berry: Unlike blueberry, bilberry can hardly be cultivated. It grows only in wild coniferous forests. The berry requires a unique symbiosis with forest mycelium.
Biological differences: Unlike blueberry, bilberry has dark purple juice and its flesh is stained with pigment. Concentrated bilberry juice has enormous coloring power, which has been used for centuries to dye fabrics.
Space protection and NASA: NASA has officially included bilberry in astronauts' diets. Its antioxidants protect brain cells from radiation and maintain visual acuity during space flight.
A WWII military legend: In Britain a rumor was spread that pilots ate bilberry jam for accurate night missions. It was a cover story for secret radar, but bilberry does indeed speed up the renewal of the retinal pigment.
Elixir for the eyes: Bilberry helps eyes adapt to twilight, strengthens the capillaries of the fundus and relieves fatigue, making it a staple ingredient in ophthalmology products.
Global geography and harvest: We supply wild bilberries from the forests of Russia and Scandinavia. Harvest season is July–August. Processing into concentrate takes place in the harvest regions to preserve the benefits.
A long-lived berry (Rare fact): Bilberry bushes can live up to 100 years. The plant can "remember" rainfall levels and adjust berry size in the following season.
Product history: Industrial processing of bilberries began in the 1950s. Cold juice extraction technologies make it possible to obtain a 65 Brix concentrate while preserving the tart aroma of forest freshness.
