Strawberry: Symbol of Venus and a Masterpiece of French Breeding

• Etymology and Common Names: The Latin name Fragaria means "fragrant". The English name strawberry refers to the plants that are "strawed" (spread) along the ground with runners, while the German Erdbeere means literally "earth berry". The French fraise and Spanish fresa trace back to the same root as the Latin name.
• The Versailles Hybrid: The modern large-fruited garden strawberry appeared in the 18th century in the gardens of Versailles as a result of accidental cross-pollination of species from Chile and Virginia (USA). This union gave the world the juicy berry we know today.
• A Botanical Rarity: Strawberry is the only fruit in the world whose seeds (tiny achenes) are located not inside but outside, on the skin. A single berry can bear up to 200 such achenes.
• A Symbol of Love and Health: In Ancient Rome, strawberry was considered a sacred symbol of the goddess Venus. Today it is recognized as a powerful antioxidant, rich in vitamin C, manganese and folic acid.
• Global Scale and Leaders: The global harvest exceeds 10.5 million tonnes annually. Mexico is the largest exporter (29% of the market). In the industrial processing segment, Egypt holds the global lead (20% of exports).
• Year-Round Harvest: We ensure uninterrupted supply. In June – July we source the berry from Poland, Russia and other European countries, and from October to December we switch to the harvest of South Africa.
• Strawberries and White Teeth (Rare Fact): Strawberry contains malic acid, which is a natural whitening agent for tooth enamel.
• Product History (1950): Industrial concentrate production became widespread in the 1950s in the USA and Mexico. The invention of vacuum evaporation at temperatures below 50°C made it possible to avoid browning of the juice and preserve anthocyanins.
• A Perfumer's Muse (Rare Fact): The strawberry aroma consists of more than 500 compounds. Scientists cannot synthesize it artificially with 100% accuracy, which is why natural raw material remains irreplaceable.
