History and interesting facts

Lemon: The Sunny Trophy of Antiquity and the «Golden Apple» of Immortality

  • Etymology and names: The name comes from the Malay lemo, which entered world languages through the Arabic laymun. In Europe, lemon entered culture on a mass scale in the 17th century, when trees in orangeries cost a fortune.
  • Alexander the Great's trophy: The homeland of lemon is India. Alexander's soldiers were the first Europeans to see these fruits and brought them to Greece as a war trophy, calling them «Indian apples».
  • Botanical perfection: A lemon tree can bear fruit for up to 40 years, producing up to 1500 fruits per season. Unlike many fruits, lemons can remain on the branch for up to several months, only becoming sweeter.
  • Bactericidal shield: Lemon essential oil is a powerful natural antiseptic. Oil vapors can destroy Staphylococcus aureus bacteria within a few hours. In ancient times, lemons were considered an antidote to snake bites.
  • Vitamin standard: A single lemon contains the daily requirement of vitamin C. It is inferior in this indicator to blackcurrant and pepper, but is valued for its complex of bioflavonoids (vitamin P) that strengthen capillaries.
  • Lemons in art (Rare fact): During the Renaissance, lemons were a symbol of fidelity. They were often depicted in the still lifes of Dutch masters as a sign of the high status of the home owner.
  • Global geography and harvest: We supply raw material from Israel, Cuba and Argentina. The main harvest season is May – October, when the fruits reach the peak concentration of essential oils.
  • History of the product: Industrial concentrate production began in the early 20th century in Italy. Centrifugation technology made it possible to separate the essential oil and return it to the concentrate after evaporation.
  • The lemon «spy» (Rare fact): Lemon juice is a classic of secret writing. Text written with it becomes invisible when dry and appears in brown only when the paper is heated.
